The Sony DCR-TRV11 is a quality consumer-grade compact Mini DV digital camcorder. A 10x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom combine to provide a total zoom of 120x, bringing even distant objects into clear view. The lens uses a special coating that reduces glare and flare while improving detail and contrast.

Like most digital camcorders, the TRV11 is equipped with an IEEE 1394 connection (also known as i.Link and Fire Wire) for digital image transfer, allowing video editing on a properly equipped home computer. In addition, all analog ports on the DCR-TRV11 have analog to digital converters built-in. With this feature, anyone upgrading from older analog equipment can transfer their old memory to new digital tapes.

If you own a TV equipped with Sony’s Super LaserLink feature (or purchase an optional Super LaserLink attachment for your TV), playback is especially easy. You can just aim the DCR-TRV120 at the TV from up to 26 feet away, press Play, and enjoy your videos without having to connect any wires.

The DCR-TRV11 also doubles as a digital still camera, recording photos onto an included Memory Stick at a resolution of 640 x 480. This resolution is fine for images you’re e-mailing or viewing on a monitor, but most dedicated digital cameras today offer far more detail. The package includes PictureGear Lite 4.1 software for Windows, which lets you transfer stills to your computer and manipulate and catalog them once they’re there.

Digital program editing allows for easy dubbing of 20 selected scenes from one digital camcorder to another, or to an analog VCR. Three different white-balance settings help optimize color. The DCR-TRV11 includes a microphone input, as well as an intelligent shoe for select Sony accessories. Also included are a 4 MB Memory Stick, serial cable for still image transfers, power supply, lithium ion battery, remote, stereo AV cable, lens cap, and shoulder strap.

Built around JVC’s exclusive Progressive 1000 technology, the GR-DVM90 is a versatile digital still and motion video camera that records stunning, high-quality digital video. The JVC GR-DV3000U is a top-flight digital camcorder, and is one of the first with the ability to capture 2-megapixel still images. Plus, it’s chock-full of enough features to satisfy just about any amateur videographer, including a 10x optical zoom, 3.5-inch LCD, and manual focus ring.

Lens
JVC put a 10x optical zoom into the GR-DV3000U, which is a good compromise of image quality and zoom power, and should be more than adequate for just about any situation. The digital zoom pumps up the total magnification to 300x, but we recommend using as low a level of digital zoom as you need, as a zoom erodes image quality, particularly at high levels.

Digital Stills
We were pleasantly surprised by the digital still capabilities of the GR-DV3000U. Many camcorders these days come with some digital still mode, some with a 1-megapixel resolution. The DV3000 surpasses all of them with the capability of recording 1,600 x 1,200 stills, which is 2-megapixel resolution. Admittedly, the stills are interpolated up–the camcorder is equipped with a 1.33-megapixel CCD–but that doesn’t take much of the luster from the achievement.

Inputs and Outputs
The DV3000U also features a fair number of inputs and outputs, meant to satisfy most consumers. You get the standard IEEE 1394 port, plus S-video analog inputs and outputs for converting all your old footage to digital, or dubbing your footage to cassette.

Lens
The ZR65MC features a high-performance 1/6-inch 680,000-pixel CCD to capture high-quality video and digital photos. Image Stabilization

Digital Still
In addition to high-quality video, the ZR65MC also captures outstanding digital photos. The ZR65MC stores these images via the built-in slot for Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard memory cards. You can also choose to store still images on the MiniDV tape. The camcorder records the photos for approximately 6 seconds, as well as recording the sound for your verbal notes or narration.
